Texan Dies Instantly When Struck by Southern Passenger Train Here.
A Texas man, seeking to reach Washington to get his cash bonus was killed, yesterday morning when he was ran over at a crossing in North Charlotte by Southern passenger train No. 11. He was Claude A. Atkins. 38, of Dallas, Texas.
Mr. Atkins and several companions were beating their way on trains to Washington and were attempting to hoard a freight train. They evidently did not see the southbound passenger train and the Texan was badly mangled when he was hit by the locomotive. He died instantly.
The body was held last night at the Z. A. Hovis & Son funeral parlor pending word from relatives in Texas.

freight train here Thursday to go to Washington to join the “bonus army".
The home of Atkins is at Texas. The service was conducted by Rev. Herbert Spaugh, chaplain of Hornets’ Nest post of the American Legion, and members of Stonewall Jackson post of Veterans of Foreign Wars served as pallbearers. Burial was in the soldiers’ plot in Elmwood Cemetery.
