Opal Kennon

SWEETWATER -- Opal Kennon, 84, died Thursday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Sweetwater First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories, directed by McCoy Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kennon was born in Cottonwood and moved to Sweetwater in 1945. She worked as a home economist for Texas Electric until retiring. She then was employed by Sweetwater Floral.

She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Friends of the Museum, Rolling Plains Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and Extension Service Club. She also was a member of the Open Door Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Kennon was preceded in death by her husband, Finis Neal Kennon, whom she married in 1935 in Carbon; and by her son, Maj. Donald Neal Kennon, a casualty of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Hardin of Brownwood; one sister, Roma Morrow of Memphis, Tenn.; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Rolling Plains Hospital Ladies Auxiliary or First United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. today in the funeral home.
