BRUCE GOVICH, PERFORMED WITH CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA

Bruce M. Govich performed opera roles with the Lake Erie Opera Theater and was a recitalist and oratorio soloist with orchestras throughout the Midwest, including the Cleveland Orchestra. For the last 22 years, he sang the national anthem at all home football games at the University of Oklahoma, where he was professor emeritus of music.

Mr. Govich was chairman of the voice faculty and was musical director or conductor for numerous musicals at the university, as well as at Oklahoma Theatre Center and Lyric.

His voice students have won numerous awards. Many of them are now voice teachers throughout the country. He is listed in the International Who's Who in Music.

Mr. Govich, 68, died Saturday in Norman, Okla., after suffering from acute leukemia.

A native of Lorain, he received his bachelor's degree from Baldwin-Wallace College. He received a doctorate of musical arts in voice and speech from the University of Illinois. He taught at Findlay College and Bowling Green State University.

During the Korean War, Mr. Govich served as a staff sergeant in the Air Force in radar technology.

He is a past member of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Lorain.

Mr. Govich is survived by his wife, Marilyn; sons, Bruce M. Jr., Steven and Daniel, all of Santa Fe, N.M.; daughters, Milena of Edmond, Okla., Mateja and Nikola, both of Norman; his mother, Mary Govich of Lorain; a brother and two sisters.

Services will be at 11:45 a.m. tomorrow at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, E. 33rd St. and Grove Ave., Lorain.

Arrangements are being handled by John J. Gluvna Funeral Chapel in Lorain.

Born in Lorain, Ohio, October 15, 1930, Govich received Master's and Doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois. He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.Dr. Govich performed opera roles with Lake Erie Opera Theater and was a recitalist and an oratorio soloist with orchestras in the midwest, including the Cleveland Orchestra. Voice students of Dr. Govich won numerous awards and many are outstanding teachers in the U.S. and Canada. He is listed in the International Who's Who in Music for distinguished services to music.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Govich of Lorain, Ohio; wife, Marilyn of Norman; daughter, Milena of Edmond; sons, Bruce Michael, Jr., Steven and Daniel of Santa Fe, N.M., Mateja and Nikola of the home. Memorial contributions may be made to Nikola Govich College Fund at Bank of Oklahoma
