Gregory Alan Raye was born October 14, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois to a large Irish-American family of firefighters. He was an avid Chicago Blackhawks fan. He moved to California in 1985 after a tour with the U.S. Air Force in the early 1980s. Settling in the Los Gatos area of San Jose, and the Santa Cruz Mountains, Gregory pursued a career as a professional artist painting portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. He also worked as a picture framer and was a well-known hockey fan of the San Jose Sharks hockey team
and was the leading voice of Section 209 at the Shark Tank in downtown San Jose.
Gregory disappeared while on a solo backpacking trip for two weeks in August 2006,
and apparently died on Sunday, August 27, 2006 when he fell to his death down a rocky mountain ravine near the summit of Mt. Brewer in Kings Canyon National Park. He was just seven weeks short of his 51st birthday.
Family and friends who celebrated his life together at Cedar Grove, in KCNP, on the weekend of September 9th and 10th, included his only son, Greg Raye Jr. aka "Rack", his wife Fawn, newborn baby named Sky, all of San Jose; his ex-wife Susan, of Sunnyvale; and friends Don J. Long, 59, of Los Angeles, Gary Shamshoian, 49, (both of whom knew him for 21 years), wife Lynne, daughter Erin, of Cupertino; David Steele, 44, of San Jose, who knew him for 19 years; Philip Yee, 46, of San Jose, who knew him for 19 years; Joe Castellano, 41, of San Jose, who knew him for 16 years; Philip's father Glenn Yee, of San Jose; John Zapisek, 55, and many others.

The thousands who fill San Jose's HP Pavilion for Sharks games didn't know Gregory Raye by name, but they knew where Raye, a fan since the team's days at the Cow Palace, sat. And they knew his voice. He sat in section 209, the rowdiest location in the building. And when it came to that group's funny, rude and sometimes profane chants, he was their leader. "He used to like to say, "They say San Jose is the loudest arena in the NHL and we're the loudest section in the arena and I'm the loudest fan in the section, so I must be the loudest fan in the NHL," his friend Mike Lawler recalled. Lawler and others in section 209 are adjusting to the fact they will have to get along without their leader.
Raye, an experienced outdoorsman, died on a solo hike in the Sierra earlier this month. His body was found Sept. 1 after his son Gregory Raye Jr. reported him missing for four days.
