Duncan Banner, Thurs., June 28, 2007
Pacoima, Calif. - Former Duncan, Okla., resident EDNA WILLIAMS, 85, a woman with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 23, 2007, in Pacoima, Calif. She leaves a legacy of Christian faith, compassion and kindness.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30, in Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel in Duncan, with the Rev. Buddy Hunt officiating. Interment will be in Duncan City Cemetery.
Edna was born July 24, 1921, in Duncan. She graduated from Empire High School. On Feb. 5, 1942, she married Ivy Odell Williams. They farmed land around Duncan until Ivy was called to the U.S. Army. After his medical discharge from the service, Edna loved and nurtured her husband until his death in 1986.
She also raised her two children, Gary and Jeanette, while working at Little's Printing in Duncan.
In 1967, Edna moved to Waco, Texas, in order to be close to her husband in the VA Hospital. Her move to Waco precipitated the opportunity to further her education. Edna graduated from Texas State Technical Institute with certi-fication to teach offset printing. She was recruited by the superintendent of Waco Public Schools to teach vocational printing at Waco High School. Her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher was achieved, and she retired from teaching in 1982.
Following her husband's death, she returned to Duncan to be near family and enjoy the fellowship of Immanuel Baptist Church. At the age of 80, after the death of her son, Gary, she took on another change. She joined her daughter and family in Pacoima. As was her lifelong pattern, she made new friends and adapted to changes in her lifestyle with grace and determination.
No matter what the situation, Edna began each day with prayer and Bible reading. She inspired her family and friends with her sense of humor, her kindness to others, and her ability to learn and grow through adversity.
Survivors include a daughter, Jeanette Focosi of Pacoima; a sister, Wanda Clyburn of Duncan; four grandchildren, Robert Wayne McKinney of Inglewood, Calif., Shannon Barnes and Dena Barnett, both of Poteau, Okla., and Mark O. Williams of Fort Smith, Ark.
Edna was blessed with great-grandsons, Kyle Xavier McKinney of Winder, Ga., Robert Wayne McKinney of Inglewood, Brice and Duncan Barnes, and Troy Barnett, all of Poteau, and Kaden Reese Williams of Fort Smith.
In heaven, Edna will be rejoicing when she meets her two sons, Curtis Dean, who was stillborn in 1943, and Gary Odell (#61836723), who passed away in September 2000.
