Cammeola Soutar was found dead with a gunshot wound through her heart in a swampy are located south of Hebron in Boone Township, Porter County, Indiana. It was believed that Catherine Marie (Morris) Cassler was Cammeloa's murder. Apparently, Cammeola was having an affair with Catherine's husband, Truman Charles "Pete" Cassler. Just prior to Cammeola's death, Catherine had told Truman that "You won't be bothered by your sweetie anymore." Catherine Cassler was taken to Valparaiso and questioned by authorities, as was her son Edward who was thought to be an accessory to the crime or, perhaps, the Cammeola's murderer. Neither Catherine nor Edward were charged and tried for the murder of Ms. Soutar due to a lack of evidence.

Cammeola Soutar's death certificate indicates that she was interred in Hebron Cemetery in Hebron, Porter County, Indiana. It is assumed that she is buried in an unmarked grave.
