Retired sea captain who as a "one-man army," fired his cannon on the British during the Revolutionary War. When the British came ashore on Conanicut Island, they were surprised to find one lone cannon.

Some suggest he is Son of John b.1670 & Mary Eldred and husband of Mary Green(e), with whom he had at least 10 children along wth a second wife named Abigail Fish. I do not believe this is correct. Several sources suggest this was another John Eldred who was Tory-leaning, and relocated to Pownal VT after Abigail’s death where he is buried in the same cemetery with son Daniel. Interestingly, both John Eldreds were born in RI in the same year, and died in the same year but on different days. I welcome any information about John buried in Jamestown, married to a Mary Wilson, and his parental line.
