AKRON
Kathy A. (Martin) Pierce, 63, of Akron, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, in Akron City Hospital, after a courageous six-year battle with heart and kidney disease. She underwent a successful heart transplant five years ago, but due to renal failure, had to continue undergoing dialysis treatments three times a week at the Cleveland Clinic. Then, some 18 months ago, she began a new battle with cancer.
She was born in Sandusky, the only child of Alfie and Catherine (Lange) Martin, and was a 1961 graduate of St. Mary's High School. Although born in Sandusky, her heart was always on Kelleys Island, where she was part of a large extended family. She was a member of St. Hillary's Catholic Church, Akron. Kathy was employed as human resources coordinator at the NASA Plum Brook Research Center in Sandusky from 1963-75 and worked in the same capacity at what is now NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland from October 1975 until September 1998. She served on the board of directors of the Hampton Ridge Condominium Owners' Association in Fairlawn. Kathy was an avid interior decorator, always putting her signature style on her home as well as her wardrobe. She loved life and lived it well.
Surviving and cherishing her memory are, her love of 18 years, Ernie Rochester of Canton; cousins, Ben (Janine) Elfers of Norwalk, Tucky Elfers, Toni (Bob) Kreimes, Sandra (Jim) Cairelli and Marilyn Gray, all of Sandusky, Bob (Kaye) Elfers of Elyria, Michael (Kelly) Elfers of Lauderdale By The Sea, Fla., Wally (Anne) Elfers of Lauderhill, Fla., Charles (Jake) Martin of Monroeville, Elaine (Martin) Galloway of Costa Mesa, Calif., Mary Elizabeth Carruthers and Mary Alice Madden, both of Cleveland, Amanda Dudas of Mesa, Ariz., and Julie (John) Kennedy of Huron; her beloved pal, Holly, a Shih-tzu pup; and a dedicated, caring group of lifelong friends.
Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m. Monday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, 219 Chappel St., Kelleys Island, where a Mass will follow at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Kelley's Island Cemetery.
