GATES - Mary Louise Cross Marable, 83, of the 400 block of Medical Center Road, died Thursday, July 9, 2009, in her home.

Mrs. Marable was born in Portsmouth and the daughter of the late Anderson G. and Mary A. Joyner Cross. A retired secretary from Tidewater Maritime Training Institute in Norfolk, she was a member of Norview Baptist Church where she served as the secretary and pianist and was active in its Adult, Grandmothers, and Bell choirs. Other memberships included the Kempsville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson "Red" Marable Jr. and her son, Paul Wilson Marable.

Surviving are three daughters and their husbands, Linda and Richard Eckert of Gates, Paula and Ira Swartz of Virginia Beach and Norma and Dale Drake of Salisbury, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Pamela Robinson and husband Jay, Robert Wilder and wife Jessica, Samantha Wilder, Amanda Drake, Andrew Drake, Daniel Swartz and wife Jennifer, Richard J. Eckert Jr. and Phillip M. Eckert; four great-grandchildren, Kristina Iacono, Rebecca Robinson, Ryan Robinson and Marie Claire Wilder; and a special family member and dear friend, Kay Eckert.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Virginia Beach Blvd., by the Rev. Mike Smith. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Norview Baptist Church, 1127 Norview Ave., Norfolk, VA 23513 or to Community Home Care and Hospice, 1601 N. Road St., Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Mary, Denise, Lena, Kelly and Alice for the special and loving care given Mrs. Marable.
