On June 6, 1888, Oscar married Minnie Katherine Sourbeck in Lanark, Illinois. In March 1905, the Smith's moved to Big Stone township in Grant County, South Dakota, where they purchased a 320-acre farm. After Oscar's death his son, Denver, took over the duties at the farm.
