When he was 10 years old the family moved to Chautauqua county, settling the in Kiantone. The family and goods were transported from Mayville by boat. Although Ellick we a mere boy he drove a team over the land route. On 04 July 1822 he married Louisa Walkup, by whom he had 5 children.
After her death in 1832 he married his second wife Harriet De Jean, by whom he fatherd many more children.
For several years he rented and managed a hotel. Afterwards he had a grocery store and was one of the first to have a meat market in Jamestown. When he was a young man he was a captain in the militia and was a natural leader in all enterprises.
