JOHN HOWARD ANDREWS
John Howard Andrews was born August 23, 1917 in Washington Township to Ira and Mary (McCarthy) Andrews. Howard, as he was known, died July 17, 2011 at Dallas County Hospital. He graduated from Washington Township Consolidated School in 1935 as class president. After graduation he began farming with his father and older brother, Don. In April of 1942, Howard was drafted into the U.S. Army and was sent overseas to the European Theater of WW II. While theree he was in the following European operations: Normandy, Norther Frances, the Ardennes offensive, Rhineland, and the Battle of the Bulge. In November 1945 he was honorably discharged and returned home to farm. On Feb. 11, 1947 Howard was united in marriage to Dallas "Kathleen" Turner at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Perry. They made their home on the family farm 5 miles west of Minburn, where he lived most of his life. Howard and Kathleen became parents of John Robert, Diana Kathleen, Susan Maureen, and David howard. Howard enjoyed spending time with his family. Sunday drives, telling stories about the old days, preparing the oyster soup on Christmas Eve, and especially liked running his farm. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and a life member of the Perry Elks lodge. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Francis and Don; sisters Mary Hanlon, Anna Andrews, Mabel swartz, and Isabel Fagen. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, of Minburn; sons, John (Susan) of Minburn and David (Kim Heiland) of Perry; daughters, Diana (Tim)Shehan of Albia and Susan (Mike) Pendegraft of Des Moines; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Father Ray Higgins officiated at the service with Chuch Schott as organist and Karen Summerson, soloist. Pallbearers were: Trent Andrews, Tony Andrews, Jeff Shehan, Brad Waldron, Clint Jenkins, Nelson Stall, Lindsay Waldron, Anne Jenkins, and Abby Andrews. Honorary Pallbearers were: Steve Fagen, Michael Fagen, Larry Swartz, Ron Swartz, Lawrence Hanlon, Drew Hanlon, Dr. Don Hanlon, and Kirby Gull. Burial was at Violet Hill Cemetery. Memorials to Central Iowa Hospice and St. Patrick's Church and may be sent to Murdock Funeral Home.
