Author and traveller. He traveled on Commodore Perry's expedition to Japan and wrote dozens of travelogues about his trips throughout the world. Taylor is widely credited with writing the first American gay novel: "Joseph and His Friend: A Story of Pennsylvania."

He was appointed secretary of legation in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1862 and in charge d'affairs of the Russian Capital. United States minister in Berlin shortly before his death in Berlin in 1878.
