Mr. Kottke joined the U.S. Army in 1905 and was posted to Fort Casey in 1913. He married Katherine Rose Lang in 1915. He made the army his career, served through World War I and retired in 1937 as a master sergeant.

His survivors included his children, Edward Jr. of Aitkin, Minnesota; William of Cambenton, Missouri; Mrs. Adah Gamble of Bellevue; Mrs. Charlotte Hulin of Aitkin and Eva Ramey of Everett. He was also survived by a sister, Mrs. Eva Wells of Winnemucca, Nevada.
