MAN DIES AFTER BEING HIT BY TRAIN, MONDAY
INJURIES FATAL TO HOWARD ROOP: DIED MONDAY NIGHT IN ABINGDON HOSPITAL
Howard Roop, Ashe County man died Monday night in an Abingdon hospital as a result of injuries sustained when struck by the train in the Whitetop section on Monday afternoon.
According to information received here, Roop was apparently standing on the track in the path of the oncoming train and was thrown in the air some distance. He received a broken leg and head injuries and was taken to the Abingdon hospital immediately for treatment and died there on Monday night.
Funeral service will be held this morning at 11:00 o'clock at the Whitetop church. Burial will follow in the Byars cemetery with Revs. Ambrose Miller and Alvin Howell officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Grace Blevins Roop, and the following children. Mrs.Blanche Powers, Harrisburg Va.; Opal Ruth, Glenda, Congress, Evelyn, Betty, Peggy, Virginia, and Ada K., all of the home. His mother Mrs. Cordelia Roop of Husk; four brothers, Arthur and Charlie Roop, of Husk, Wilson and Roy, of Whitetop; three sisters, Mrs. Dillie Miller, of Husk; and Mrs. Minnie Farmer and Mrs. Dora Little, of Whitetop, also survive.
