The Gettysburg times February 23, 1929

Brought to the Adams county home this morning, less than four hours before the time scheduled for the funeral of his wife, John Bender, 74, Fairfield, died as he seated himself in a rocking chair in the room assigned to him. Death occurred at 9:00.
Mr. Bender had been ill for two weeks, but was able to be about. The death of his wife, Mrs. Catherine Elizabeth Bender, 81, Thursday afternoon of pneumonia, was a great shock to the husband, and friends of the family, fearing the man's attendance at the funeral of his wife this afternoon would be an added shock, advised him to go to the county home this morning, instead of waiting until this evening as originally planned.
...
Mr. Bender leaves two daughters Mrs. John Hoffman, Gettysburg, and Mrs. John Lawrence, McSherrystown. so far as could be learned, he leaves no brothers or sisters.
Funeral services from the Fairfield Reformed church at 2:00, Monday afternoon, the Rev. R.W. Limbert officiating. Interment in the Fairfield cemetery.
