Mrs. Lessie Catherine Doolittle died Friday morning, Aug. 5, 1966, at the Jasper County General Hospital, Bay Springs. She had returned to Jasper County a few days earlier from Houston, Tex., where she lived for several years with her son and his family. She formerly lived in New Orleans, La., where she had served as a school traffic director.
Mrs. Doolittle was a native of Jasper County, born April 21, 1900, her parents being Lummy and Susan Pugh Read. She lived in Newton for many years during the lifetime of her husband, Waddie W. Doolittle, who died in 1940. She held membership in the Newton Methodist Church.
She leaves two sons, W.W. Doolittle of Houma, La., and Harrison Read Doolittle of Houston, Tex.; 12 grandchildren; six brothers, W.W. Read of Bay Springs, M.T. Read of Indianola, W.T. Read of Pascagoula, H.E. Read of Louin, M.H. Read of Clarksdale and C.R. Read of Powell, Tenn.; and six sisters, Mrs. F.W. Windham and Mrs. L.L. Nester, both of Louin, Mrs. Homer Lee and Mrs. Edison Wilson, both of Bay Springs, Mrs. J.E. Hendricks of Jackson and Mrs. W.H. Lewis of Springville, N.Y.
Her funeral was held at Memory Chapel, Bay Springs, at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, with the Rev. James Williamson officiating. Interment followed beside her late husband in the Masonic Cemetery, Newton, with the Rev. M.E. Burnett, local of the service. Nephews served as active pall bearers.
