US Senator, Ohio Governor, Cleveland Mayor. A member of the Republican Party, he served the State of Ohio in the United States Senate from 1999 until 2011. He served as the 65th Governor of Ohio from 1991 until 1998 and served as the 54th Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio from 1982 until 1989. Voinovich established himself as one of Ohio's most popular political figures during his era. Born to Catholic parents of Serbian and Slovenian descent, he suffered from osteomyelitis during his childhood, which required a lengthy period in the hospital. The condition left him with a slight limp. After receiving his Bachelor's degree from Ohio University, he attained his Law degree from Ohio State University in 1961. He served as assistant attorney general of Ohio from 1963 until 1964 and entered the political arena, when he was elected to and served in the Ohio State House of Representatives (1967 to 1971). He briefly served as lieutenant governor of Ohio. He defeated incumbent Mayor Dennis J. Kucinich (who went on to become a US Congressman from Ohio) and during his tenure as Mayor of Cleveland, he was able to spearhead a tax increase to reduce a massive deficit. The Cleveland Skyline underwent a largely funded revitalizing project. As governor, he focused on education and provided funding for underprivileged school districts in the state. While in Washington, he focused on deficit reduction and served as the Chair of the Select Committee on Ethics. He suffered a personal tragedy in 1979, when his nine year old daughter Molly was struck and killed by a vehicle while she was returning to school after lunch break.
