In the "History of Henry County, Missouri" by Uel W. Lamkin, 1919, p. 744, the 1864 death of Edwin Benson is mentioned. Edwin was traveling with his brother, S. R. Benson, from Delaware County, Iowa to Montana. Lamkin writes "The brother [Edwin] died on the plains... [S.R.] continued on alone, taking his brother's body with him until he came upon a party of campers who helped him make a rough coffin out of a wagon box and assisted in the burial." As the brothers traveled for part of the trip along the Platte River in Nebraska and Wyoming there is a good chance that Edwin is still buried in one of those two states as very few trail victims were ever returned home for burial.
The information is in a Missouri county history because S. R. later settled in Henry County in that state.
