Soviet Cosmonaut. A native of the village of Verkhnie Zhilino, in the Altai Region, of Russia, he was the second person to orbit the earth. A graduate of the Stalingrad Military Aviation School, he was a pilot with the rank of Colonel General in the Soviet Air Force when he was selected in 1960 for cosmonaut training by the Air Force Group 1 for the Vostok 2 Mission. The mission launched on August 6, 1961, with only Titov on board, at 05:00 UTC(Coordinated Universal Time), from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, and landed on August 7, 1961, at 07:18 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), at Krasny Kut. The duration of the trip that saw Titov circle the earth a number of 17.5 times, was a total of 1 day, 1 hour, and 18 minutes. After his spaceflight he became a national hero and remained active in several different senior positions in the Soviet space program until his retirement in 1992. Gherman Titov was also the first person to suffer from space sickness and the youngest person ever to fly into outer space. In 1995, he was elected to the State Duma as a member of the Communist Party. A recipient of several awards and honours he was given the titles of Hero of Mongolia, Hero of Labor of Vietnam, Hero of Socialist Labor of Bulgaria, two Orders of Lenin, and also had a crater on the far side of the Moon named after him. He passed away after suffering a heart attack, nine days after his 65th birthday.
