Brakeman Killed

While switching in the yard at Blue Canyon last Sunday afternoon, brake-man Burke Haines was caught under the truck of his caboose, which was dropping down to the switch. The poor man was so badly crushed that he died at Newcastle while being taken to his home in Rocklin, where he had a wife and several children. Haines was on the first section of freight 214 going East. The accident was witnessed by Conductor H.C Sweitzer and brakemen F.E. Van Vleet and W.R. Finnle, who were coming West. They took the injured man as far as Gold Run, where they got Engineer Hunter and a light engine and with Sweitzer's caboose conveyed Haines to Rocklin. Coroner Shepard held an inquest the same night, the jury exonerating the railroad company and its employees from all blame. Following werd the jury: Sherman Dresser, H.C. Pockman, J. McSmith, Jacob Hanson, Chas. W. Decater and Chas. T. Newton.
