Robert was the son of Earl E. McVey and Ruth J. (Bishop) McVey Payson. He died of pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 17 in the Institute for the Feeble Minded at Orient, Pickaway County, Ohio. He had been in the institution since he was a young child as he is listed in the 1930 census being there at age 9.
