Coroner's Inquest in murder of Claude Oliver and returned verdict that Claude Oliver came to his death from a pistol gunshot wound fired by Rolfe Eldridge, and that the firing of said shot was in self defense, and justified. Oliver was shot by Eldridge about 9:30 p.m. Monday night, in the store of C.C.Perry & Co., five shots penetrating the body. He was first given attention by Dr.J.O.Rush and Dr.N.C.McCown, and carried to Brinkley on the midnight train, for treatment at Magnolia hospital. He died at 1 a.m. Wednesday morning. Funeral services were held this morning from the home of Mrs.Anna Laughinghouse, conducted by Rev.S.M.Yancey, and interment was had in Mt.Vernon cemetery. Mr.Eldridge is a first cousin of the deceased, and it is told that Mr.Oliver was a drug addict, and while under the influence, thought his cousins Fred, Rolfe, and Fenner Eldridge were enemies, He had followed Rolfe Eldridge into the store to have it out with him. Mr.Eldridge who is also a deputy sheriff, attempted to quiet him, and in self defense was compelled to shoot. Forrest City Times Herald
