Funeral services for Senator James Albert Lewis Jr., 85, Charlestown, will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 13, at Grayson Funeral Home, Charlestown, with burial in Charlestown Cemetery. He passed away Thursday, June 9, 2016, at his home.

Senator Lewis was born on Dec. 26, 1930 in Highland, Ky. to James A. and Laura McGuffey Lewis. He was a retired building contractor, a Boy Scout Master for 18 years, an IHSAA Official for 20 years and a member of the First United Methodist Church and Blazing Star Masonic Lodge 226. Jim attended Purdue University and served as a Charlestown City Councilman for eight years, a Clark County Councilman for two years, as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives for two years and in The Indiana Senate for 32 years where he served as Democrat Caucus Chairman received several Legislator of the Year Awards.

Senator Lewis is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anna Mae Spencer Lewis; sons, David Lewis (Renata), Charlestown, Thomas Lewis (Cheri), Scottsburg, and Charles Lewis (Joanne), Northhaven, CT; brothers, Ray Lewis (Lynn), Clarksville, and Russell Lewis (Mary Lou), Jacksonville, FL; sister, Betty Coombs,Charlestown; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Lorraine Bowen and Christine Lewis; and brothers, Donald and Franklin Lewis.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, and after 9 a.m. Monday, at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to First United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
