Dr. Mhreteab Gebre-Selassie, M.D., 84, went to be his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 in Huntsville, Texas at Huntsville Memorial Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Geber-Selassie Habtu, mother Abeba Gebre-Selassie, sister Miriam Gebre-Selassie and son Minab Mhreteab Gebre-Selassie.
Dr. Selassie is survived by his wife of 52 years Miriam Y. Gebre-Selassie, children Suzy Selassie-Michael & husband David Michael, Sofie GebreSelassie, Lliban Gebre-Selassie. Five grandchildren Samra Michael, Daniel Michael, Amaha Ghide, Melaki Ghide, and Yatana Ghide.
Siblings Tseggai Gebre-Selassie, Mebrak Gebreselassie, Woini Abebe, Salome Habte, and Mengis Gebre-Selassie and several cousins, nephews, and nieces.
Dr. Selassie attended University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1953. He came to the U.S. in 1953 and attended Indiana University and got his B.A. degree. He graduated from Medical School at the University of Indiana in 1959. He continued his internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. He worked as a physician in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia and as a Health Officer in Eritrea until 1964. In 1965, he returned to the U.S. to specialize in Internal Medicine at the Hines V.A. Hospital in Illinois. He returned to Addis Abeba in 1970 and was in charge of Medical Wards at the Ministry of Public Health of Ethiopia. In 1976, he became affiliated with the Chicago Hospital, Norwegian American Hospital, and Mary Thompson Hospital in Illinois. In 1979, he moved to Huntsville, Texas and started private practice. He was also the Walker County Health Officer starting in 1983. After many years of practice, he retired and traveled with his wife and friends.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and playful grandfather who dedicated himself to family, friends, and community.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Eritrean Lutheran Church Outreach, at 8601 Chimney Rock, Houston, 77096.
Dr. Selassie will lie in state from 9:00 AM till 4:00 PM on Friday, June 10, 2016 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Faith Lutheran Church in Huntsville, Texas. Interment will follow the service at Mayes Addition of Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas.
