Mr. Hargett served in the Army for 12 years during both World War II and the Korean War. He was stationed in the Pacific Islands. His decorations include American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre w/3 Bronze Service Stars and Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He obtained the rank of Master Sergeant for the US Army.
After discharge, Mr. Hargett returned to Augusta where he started his own construction company building homes. For many years he was a superintendent for National Engineering Co. where he worked on many projects including the Meldahl Dam, Riverfront Stadium and the Lytle Tunnel. Upon retirement, Mr. Hargett considered himself a farmer. He enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren explore the wonders of living on the farm.
He was a devout member of St. Augustine Church, served as a former City of Augusta councilman and former Commander of the VFW, and he was a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Hargett was an avid golfer, and a Cincinnati Reds and Kentucky Wildcat fan.
Mr. Hargett was born April 30, 1924, in Wellsburg, the son of the late Stanley and Lola (Weatherington) Hargett.
Mr. Hargett is survived by seven children, Jeni Boyer of Florence, Margie Hargett of Augusta, John (Debbie) Hargett of Augusta, Julie (Mike) Moore of Augusta, JB (Angie) Hargett of Augusta, Bob (Teresa) Hargett of Corinth, Becky (Bob)Tomb of Lexington and daughter-in-law Connie Hargett of Augusta.
Mr. Hargett has 16 grandchildren, Brandon Hargett, Travis Z. Hargett, Andrew Boyer (Lindsay), Jason Moore (Ashley), Leigha Hargett, Cassie Lefevre (Ryan), Rebekah Moore, Molly Hargett, John Hargett, Dylan Hargett, Kaitlyn Hargett, Max Hargett, Ava Tomb, Eli Hargett, Ella Tomb and Jacob Hargett.
He also has three great-grandchildren, Paige Hargett, London Moore and Camden Moore; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Travis Hargett; a daughter, Elizabeth; four brothers, Tom, Jim, Tudy and Frankie; and two sisters, Alice Ann Davis and Erma Dale Kirk.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m., on Friday at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, 301 E. Fourth St., Augusta.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at St. Augustine Church, 215 E. Fourth St., Augusta.
Interment will follow the funeral service in the St. Augustine Cemetery.
