Danny Ray Mitchell, 81, of Arkansas City, KS, passed away on Thursday evening, June 9th, 2016 at his home.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 13th at 10:00 A.M. at Mt. Zion Community Church with Pastor Gale Rider officiating. Burial will follow at Parker Cemetery east of Arkansas City. Friends may call at Shelley Family Funeral Home of Arkansas City on Sunday, June 12 from 2:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. The family will greet friends that evening from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Memorials have been established in Mr. Mitchell’s name for the Mt. Zion Community Church and Interim Hospice. Contributions may be made through the church or the funeral home.

Danny Ray Mitchell was born on February 10, 1935 in Blackwell, Kay County, Oklahoma the son of Ray Almon and Hazel Fern (Deal) Mitchell. He graduated from Blackwell High School in 1954 and went on to college at Northern Oklahoma College. From 1957 to 1959, he served in the United States Army. His drill sergeant wanted him to stay, but he said, “No Sir, I gave you the best 2 years of my life and I’m going home”. He did remain in the National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1963. Upon returning home, he found the love of his life Judith Ann Trenary and they were married on November 6, 1960. Danny and Judy started farming and had a dairy on their first farm. They moved west of Arkansas City and farmed and raised hogs and cattle. Danny went to Auctioneer school. He auctioned the Wichita Union Stockyards for 17 years until its closing. They moved to Parkerfield, KS in 2004 and Danny became really involved in showing Nubian Goats in southern Kansas. He also was showing at the Kansas State Fair and had many champions over the years. As his health failed, Danny and Judy decided to move to town.

Danny’s hobbies included raising Quarter Horses, Chesterwhite Hogs, and purebread Nubian Milking Goats. He was a member of the AQHA, Arkansas City Lions Club, Chesterwhite Association and the Blackwell COOP.

His surviving family includes his wife, Judy of the home; his sons: Ernest Ray Mitchell and wife Dedra of Greenwood, LA and Ty Wade Mitchell and wife Kimberly of Oxford, KS; his brother, Dwight Mitchell and wife Mary of Hinesville, AR; his sister, Karen Crawford and husband of Hastings, Nebraska; his 4 grandchildren, Nathan Mitchell and wife Crystal, Hannah Mitchell, Dakota Mitchell and Hunter Mitchell and his 3 great-grandchildren, Dakota, Cheyenne and Samantha Mitchell. Danny was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Hazel and two children, Mark Allen and Lisa Ann.
