Catherine came to Australia with her parents at the age of 11, her mother died eight days before the vessel arrived. With her father she spent time at the Burra copper mines, then Bendigo gold diggings where she married James McGann.
In 1854 they came to Maitland NSW and went on the land. They then moved to Cessnock and in 1868 took up their homestead at Mount View...they were the first settlers there.
