Azariah Arthur was the son of Lewis Arthur and Malinda Flemming. He married Rebecca Haven 6/20/1860 and 13 children: Abigail, Sarah Jane, Emma, Malinda, Andrew Jackson, Isabelle, Howard, Lewis, Cynthia, Nancy Elizabeth, Martha, David and Della. He served in the Civil War as a private in Company H, 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery and was assigned to the defense of Cincinnati, Ohio. He became deaf and was sent home on a furlough. He did not return to duty so he was arrested by the Provost Marshal and sent to prison in Washington DC as a deserter. After the war he was pardoned.
