Jan Van Hess, a 30-year resident of Olympia, Washington, died of cancer April 25, 2015 at the age of 61. He was born February 15, 1954 to Vernon and Veronica Van Hess in Hamilton, Montana.

He grew up in the Aberdeen area, graduating from Weatherwax High School, and later Evergreen State College in Olympia.

Jan was a very loving person. He always put others before himself, caring for all without discrimination. He loved singing in choral groups and acting in musical theater.

He is survived by his mother, Veronica; son, Kyle (Candy) of Miami, Florida; brother, Mark of Montesano, Washington; sisters, Shelly (Leith) Swenson of Bellingham, Washington, and Gina Van Hess (Don White) of Anacortes, Washington; sister-in-law, Susan of Olympia; his close friend, Kayo; two cousins; six nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Peter.

Jan's family suggests memorial donations be made to Masterworks Choral Ensemble: mce.org, or SRO Theater, 308 E. Yelm Ave., Yelm, WA 98597. There will be a memorial celebration of Jan's life on Sunday, June 7, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Women's Club of Olympia (Abigail Stuart House), 1002 Washington St. SE, Olympia, WA 98501.
