Weapons Inventor. Born in Sangerville, Maine, he moved to England in 1881. He is widely known for inventing and developing the Maxim Machine Gun, which was the first portable, self powered, fully automatic machine gun. As such, it is credited for changing infantry tactics in the early 20th Century, where it and it's variants saw extensive service in conflicts such as the Russo-Japanese War, the Boer Wars, the Russian Revolution, and World War I. Hiram Maxim also developed innovations such as a delayed-action fuse, smokeless gunpowder, and an early airplane. His Maxim Gun company merged with Vickers in 1896. He became a British citizen in 1900 and was knighted a year later, dying in Streatham in 1916. He was the father of inventor Hiram Percy Maxim.
