CHARLES FREDERICK HARRINGTON ("Fred"), eldest son of Charles A. and Elvira (Bascom) Harrington, was born March 27, 1848 at Greene, Trumbull County, Ohio. The family moved from Greene to Warren in 1861, and Fred received his high school education there. His schooling was interrupted by eight months of army service as a private in Company D of the 196th regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He had enlisted without the knowledge of his father, in January, l865. After being mustered out, he was able to graduate with his high school class in June, 1866. In the fall of that year he entered Western Reserve College at Hudson, 0. and graduated there in 1870. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity. He remained at the college as a tutor until the following spring, then obtained government employment in survey work along the shores
of Lake Michigan. On April 6, 1871, he was married but very soon after this he was overcome by tuberculosis, and died at Warren on October 8th of that year. He is buried in Oakwood cemetery at Warren.
