Mattie was born in Lake Village Arkansas. She was the oldest of five children and had a hard but loving life helping her mom and caring for her siblings. During a family visit to her grandmother's, "Mattie" Berry Cole Jones, the children started to play 'cowboys and indians". Her grandmother, mother & baby sister had gone into town and the men were enjoying each others company. Her brother Harold decided to take his step-grandfather's rifle down, from above the fire place, to include in their play. Unfortunately he accidently discharged the rifle and wounded Mattie, and she eventually died from her wounds. Mattie was loved by her family. -soj

My father Clyde was very close to Mattie until her death according to Zora Cole a great aunt (now deceased). Her head stone was bought by her sister Mary Lou Jeffries Jones and her husband Horatio Louis Jones. -Colleen Jeffries
