Major James Haggerty, who died In New York on Wednesday (21 Dec 1887) after a long illness, came to this country as a boy, and while earning a living found time to educate himself and study law. He served for a year during the war as adjutant to the Eleventh New York Volunteers, and afterward became well known as a republican politician. He was an effective stump speaker, President Grant sent him as consul to Glasgow in 1869, , but the British government refused to receive him because of his having aided the Irish national cause In this country. He mugwumped In the Greeley campaign of 1872 and afterward continued a democrat, and was rewarded by being several times elected to the New York legislature. He was greatly disappointed at not receiving the nomination for senator in the Ninth city district this year. He was a man of many friends.
