Elzo's working life was spent in the oil field from an early age. He advanced from roughneck to driller and continued as a driller throughout his working life. He worked in South Texas, Mexico, Guatemala and perhaps other countries in Latin America. About 1960 he started working further afield, first in Kuwait, then in Libya and finally in Nigeria. He came back to Texas for the rest of his life. He lived in Alice until his health deteriorated. He lived for a time with his brother's family. From there he moved into the Veteran's Nursing Home in Kerrville, Texas. He died there.
