Altus “Jewel” Buchanan, 84 was called home from this life on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at Lawrence County Hospital in Monticello, MS. Jewel was born June 3, 1932 in Lawrence County, MS, to Leslie F. and Ida Morris Buchanan.
Visitation will be held at Bethel Baptist Church on Thursday, June 9, 2016 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Funeral Service will be at Bethel Baptist Church on Friday, June 10, 2016 at 2:00 PM with graveside service to follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. Bro. Michael Smith will officiate the services. Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Buchanan served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a retired city engineer from the Town of Monticello where he worked for 32 years. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church of Monticello, MS. He was a member of Monticello Lodge #610. He enjoyed fishing, camping and his woodworking. He was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Catherine Smith Buchanan of Monticello, MS; sons, Ricky Buchanan and wife Janice of Jacksonville, FL, Andy Buchanan and wife Angela of Silver Creek, MS; sister, Earleen Buchanan Howell of Monticello, MS, brother, Leslie “Jr” Buchanan of Monticello, MS; grandchildren, Nathan Buchanan and wife Ashley, Tyler Buchanan and Tony Buchanan; great granddaughter, Haley Buchanan and a host of step grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Proceeding him in death is parents Leslie F. and Ida Morris Buchanan; daughter–in-law, Melissa Buchanan; brothers, Elzy Buchanan and Delmus Buchanan; and sister, Zula Magee.
