Jane E. Daly Mitchell of Augusta passed away on May 4, 2016, at the age of 92.
Jane was born on June 4, 1923 in Brockton, Mass. She was the youngest daughter of seven children of Edmund K. Daly, a pharmacist, and his wife Edna Mae Clark Daly, a high school teacher. The Daly family moved to Boston in the early 1940's and later to Bangor, Maine, where she was employed as a beautician. During this time she met and married Albert T. Mitchell in 1948. Albert was an accountant at Bean & Conquest Motors in Bangor and moved the family to Hallowell in 1956 and later to Augusta, where he was employed as head accountant and Vice President of Blouin Motors until his death in 1976.
She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and also a great, great grandmother. In addition to raising her three children, through the years she was employed as a saleslady at W.T. Grant in Augusta until the store closed in 1975. She subsequently worked as a saleslady at K-Mart and then at Sears Roebuck in Augusta for the next 11 years. During this time, Jane also took on responsibility for managing her family owned apartment buildings at 10 & 12 Spring Street in Augusta, while also serving as a volunteer worker for 25 years at the Community Exchange Thrift Store in Augusta. While her youngest daughter Deborah was growing up, she also volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader.
Jane was an avid traveler, taking trips over the years to the Virgin Islands, and Hawaii. In 1991, her son Thomas joined her on an extensive tour of Eastern and Western Europe.
In 1992, in search of warmer weather, and to be near her sister Kathryn Biagiotti, she moved to Phoenix, Ariz., and continued work as a saleslady with Sears at several locations. Following her retirement from Sears at age 78, she worked for two more years as a product demonstrator at Costco in Paradise Valley, Ariz., which she truly enjoyed as it gave her a chance to continue to meet people. She worked there until the age of 80. Jane returned to Maine each summer for a couple of weeks to reconnect with family and friends, and also to enjoy lobsters and fried clams. Anyone who knew Jane knew of her love of pugs, and over the years she owned several of them. After 15 years of living in the desert, she moved back to Maine in 2007 to be near her daughter Deborah and her grandchildren.
Jane was an avid mystery novel reader, often devouring three or four novels a week. She was also a savvy shopper and had an uncanny ability to find a bargain at stores or yard sales. She also enjoyed going to the Cohen Center to join in the Crochet Classes.
She was predeceased by her husband of 28 years, Albert T. Mitchell; son-in-law John Campbellton; granddaughter Jessyca Caswell; all of her brothers and sisters, as well as 5 nephews.
Jane will be greatly missed by her daughters, Linda M. Campbellton of Tucson, Ariz., Deborah J. Barry and her husband Ted of Farmingdale, her son, Thomas H. Mitchell of Culver City, Calif.; granddaughters, Ann and her husband Dana LeBarron of Coplin Plantation, Wanda Witham of Tucson, Ariz., Tami Farnsworth and her husband Shaun of Sidney, Caryn Brunelle and her husband Dan of Augusta; grandson, Theodore J. Barry of Farmingdale, great-grandchildren, Ashley Caswell, Riqui Witham, Jamie Witham, Chelsea and Samantha Merry, Kaitlyn, Kali and Ryan Brunelle, Joseph and Anthony Barry, Prudence Smith, her husband Bill and their children, and Michael Feegel, his wife Katie and their children; as well as four great-great-granddaughters Donna, Jessyca, Sabrina and Addison. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
