Leo William "Bill" Hayes, 79, of New Kensington died Tuesday (June 11, 2002) in his home.

Born Feb. 7, 1923, in Washington, Pa., he lived in Lower Burrell for 17 years before moving to New Kensington.

A veteran, he served in World War II with the Army in the battles of Luzon, New Guinea and Bismark Archipelago. He received the American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Good Conduct medal and the Victory Medal.

He worked at Pittsburgh Plate Glass, East Deer.

Mr. Hayes was a member of Mount St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, New Kensington.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Virginia (Herbert) Tortorice Lawton of Chapin, S.C., Mrs. Mary Ellen (John) Kalil of Plum and Mrs. Kathleen (Richard) Newcomer of Front Royal, Va.; and a brother, Robert Hayes of Harmar.

Also surviving are three grandchildren, Matthew Sulkowski, Jennifer Kalil and Kelly Newcomer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie Venturella Hayes; his parents, James and Mary Donahue Hayes; and two sisters, Margaret Batisko and Irene Fellers.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington, where a blessing service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell. Military services will be accorded by the Joint Veterans, Vandergrift.
