Camden, SC - Fred Roukos Sheheen, 79, beloved husband of Rose Serio Sheheen for almost fifty years, died Monday, June 6, 2016. He was born in Camden, SC, a son of the late Austin Moses Sheheen, Sr. and Lucile Roukos Sheheen. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Olivia Marie Sheheen and his brother, Michael Sheheen.

Mr. Sheheen was a former head of the state Commission of Higher Education. He was a graduate of Camden High School and finished with honors from Duke University in the late 1950s. After graduating, he worked as a reporter for The Charlotte Observer, covering civil-rights issues. In the 1960s, he worked as an aide to S. C. Gov. Donald Russell. Mr. Sheheen was head of the state agency that oversees public colleges and universities, the Commission on Higher Education, from 1987-1997. At the commission, he helped craft policies to provide equality for blacks attending S. C. colleges and universities. He was a dedicated supporter of the arts and very active in local and civic affairs. He was a very well respected South Carolinian and member of the Midlands. He taught an honors course on South Carolina State Government for the University of South Carolina. He was a lifelong supporter of the Democratic Party and continued to be committed to public service until his death.

Besides his wife, Mr. Sheheen is survived by his son: Vincent Sheheen (Amy) of Camden, SC; Maria Spring (Steven) of Camden, SC and Margaret Bishop (Matthew) of Camden, SC; brothers: Austin M. Sheheen, Jr. and Robert J. Sheheen; grandchildren: Austin, Joseph and Anthony Sheheen, William and Robert Spring, David, Olivia and Thomas Bishop.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Fred Roukos Sheheen, 79, of Camden, SC, will be held at noon Thursday, June 9, 2016 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Father John Zimmerman will officiate. The family will receive visitors at the home on Wednesday, June 8th from 10 AM to 4 PM.
