A. D. was a veteran of the Civil War serving in the Alabama 31st Infantry. He was mustered out as a prisoner of war on July 9, 1863 and allowed to go back home to his wife. He was captured in the seige of Vicksburg which ended on July 4, 1863. His papers declared that he (A. D. Elrod) was a Sergeant of Company B , 31st Regiment of Alabama Volunteers, C. S. A. He had to sign an oath of allegience to the United States of America and vow not to take up arms against the USA ever again. He and "Betty" had been married only a short time before he had to enter the military service. Frank Elrod has a copy of his paper that he signed to be released as a prisoner of war and return home. Sometime after 1870 and before 1875 he moved his family to the Philadelphia Community north of Jonesboro, Arkansas where he lived out his years.
