Son of Claude Lee Jr. and Helen (Baker) Bates

He grew up and attended school in Pryor and Bristow, Oklahoma, and graduated high school in Sarcoxie, Missouri.

He then served in the United States Navy.

In the 1970's, he assisted his father at Bates Funeral Home in Chetopa.

He then worked at Atlas Steel in Oswego and later at Sonoco Industries of Chetopa.

He had been employed as a welder at Diamond Coach Corporation in Oswego for the past 13 years.

He was an avid horseshoe pitcher, a great fan of bluegrass music, and had attended bluegrass music festivals in Winfield, Kansas, with his wife and family for 33 years.

He and Susan Rife were married November 9, 1973, in Oswego.
