French Playwright. Known for his contributions to the theater of the absurd. His first play, The Bald Soprano (an 'anti-play', 1950), was a parody of theater of the boulevard and turned many theatrical conventions on their head. It is still shown regularly at the Theatre de la Huchette in Paris. Other major works: The Lesson (1951), The Chairs (1952), and The Rhinoceros (1960). Epitaph: 'To pray to I-don't-know-who / I hope: Jesus Christ'.
