Soda Springs, Vaughn Fred Smith joined his Father in Heaven and family members on June 5, 2016, while holding hands with his lifetime sweetheart of 72 years, Deon. He was born the fourth child of Edwin M. and Winifred Victoria Smith on November 1st, 1927, in Logan, Utah. He moved with his family at 7 years old to Soda Springs Idaho and helped his family build the big, log and rock home on Hooper Avenue. Vaughn attended school in Soda Springs and was also a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Vaughn met his soulmate at the tender age of 15 years old. They were united in marriage on January 7th, 1944. They were later sealed in the Logan LDS Temple.

Vaughn & Deon were blessed with three children, Vicki, DeVaughn & Brad. His most valued gifts in his life were his children and their families. Those who knew Vaughn and Deon knew they are also part of their family.

Vaughn’s church callings were Counselor in the Bishopric, Young Men’s President and Home Teacher. He served in the Boy Scouts of America for over 60 years. He was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver award in December of 2002. He also received Scouter of the Year from Cecil Andrus, Governor of Idaho. His most appreciated scouting accomplishment was the building and the maintenance of Little Lemhi Boy Scout Camp in Palisades.

At 12 years old, Vaughn started to work in the logging and sawmill industry with his father & brother. His main duties at 13 years old were driving lumber trucks and hauling logs. This began his love of construction and building. He spent the remainder of years building his business, Vaughn Smith Construction, where he worked every day until the day he was no longer able to work.

His main focus was spending time with his family and being very involved in what they were doing. His favorite place to be was the Cabin at Diamond Creek. His entire family and many, many friends built countless memories and relationship sitting around the fire telling stories.

Vaughn will be remembered as a pillar in the community. He took care of so many families and widows throughout the years, most of the time remaining anonymous. Vaughn & Deon will always be known as Grandpa & Grandma to everyone in their community.

He is survived by his bride, Deon Davis Smith, a daughter, Vicki (Larry) Hopkins, son DeVaughn (Carolyn) Smith, and daughter-in-law Tammie Smith. Eight grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, and many very special nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his loving step-mother, Veneta Smith, four siblings, Edwin B. (Evah) Smith, Enid (Herb) Walters, Emma Jean (Marlin) Lakey, and Valoy Smith, and one son, Brad Smith.

Funeral services will be held Thursday June 9th at 12:00 at the Bailey Creek Chapel located at 361 S 3rd E., Soda Springs, ID.
