First Baron Alvanley (1744–1804), judge.
Second son of John Arden of Harden Hall and his wife, Mary, daughter of Cuthbert Pepper of Pepper Hall, near Richmond in the North Riding of Yorkshire. His second name, Pepper, was given to him in honour of his mother, who brought the Pepper Hall property into the family.
On 9 September he married Anne Dorothea (d. 1825), the daughter of another Pittite MP, Richard Wilbraham-Bootle of Rode Hall, Cheshire.
