John Carroll Grant entered eternal rest on Thursday June 2, 2016 at Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home in Bonham, Texas. His body had grown tired but his sweet spirit and humor never left him. He was born May 14, 1920 in Whitesboro, Texas and spent his early years in that area with his parents Lee Francis Grant and Ferrell Lavica Ragsdale Grant and siblings. He graduated from Whitesboro High School. Shortly after graduation he volunteered and served as a Marine during World War II. He was proud of the fifty-five months he spent defending the United States at Guadalcanal, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, Saipan, and Marianna Islands. He was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery in 1945. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Marines never left him as friends and family will attest.
Prior to deployment to the Pacific, John met Bernadette Veronica McGuire whom He corresponded with throughout the duration of his service. After returning from his service, he returned to New York City where he married the love of his life Bernadette. They were married for 62 years and resided in New York City until her death in 2008. He was a long time employee of New York State Insurance. To those who knew him well, he leaves a legacy of honor, love of family, friends, and for his country. Just prior to his death he had the privilege of being selected as a World War II Veteran to participate in an Honor Flight to Washington DC where he attended ceremonies at the World War II Memorial and Arlington Cemetery.
He is survived by one sister-in-law, several nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his wife Bernadette Veronica (McGuire) Grant, his parents, two brothers William Frank Grant and Elvis Grant, and four sisters Mamie Williams, Gladys Neal, Sue Teague, and Lou Wilson.
The staff at Clyde Cosper Texas State Veterans Home has become John’s family for the past six years they have loved him as he has loved them. His contagious smile and daily hugs has brightened the days of many. His life was enriched by numerous people especially his domino buddy Steve Bruce.
To honor John’s life there will be visitation at Wise Funeral Home on Monday June 6, 2016 from 6pm to 7pm with a Memorial Service beginning at 7pm. John will then be flown back to New York where he will join his wife at Calverton National Cemetery.
