Emerson Ryerson Koyl was born in South Dorchester, Elgin Co., Ontario, the son of Chancy Koyl and Phoebe Perkins. He moved to Spokane in 1906 and became an engineer for the Great Northern Railroad Company. Emerson was killed when his train, the westbound Empire Builder of the Great Northern, was derailed by a rockslide about 30 miles east of Bonners Ferry, Idaho. He was survived by his widow, Hilda Mary (Mills) Koyl and two daughters, Virginia B. and Jean Elizabeth Koyl.
