TARBORO - R. Claxton Autry, 74, died on Thursday, June 02, 2016 peacefully at Prodigy Transitional Rehab in Tarboro NC. He was born at home in Cumberland County, Stedman NC on October 18, 1941, son of the late Georgia Honeycutt Autry and Woodrow Autry.

Claxton graduated from Stedman High School in 1960 where he participated in baseball, basketball, football and track. He served as Vice President of the Junior Class and President of his Senior Class. He was selected for Who's Who of the Senior Class by the faculty and received Best All Around Senior Boy superlative by his classmates. Claxton maintained a close relationship with his classmates through yearly class reunions.

After high school he began his career in telecommunications with Carolina Telephone in Rocky Mount NC as a lineman where he learned to climb telephone poles, hang lines and install telephones. Claxton was transferred to Ahoskie, Rich Square, Henderson, Warrenton, and back to Henderson as I&R Installer Repairman. Other moves were Manteo as PBX Foreman, Tarboro PBX Equipment Supervisor, Rocky Mount Division Service Manager and General Sales and Service Manager. Going through all the corporate changes he retired after 37 years of service with Sprint.

Upon retirement Claxton received his realty license but was given the opportunity to work with Centura Bank of Rocky Mount. There he worked in various positions: Voice Communications Manager, Desktop Support Manager, Senior Project Manager, AML (Anti Money Laundering) Investigator. Receiving certification as an AML Specialist (ACAMS) he became Senior AML Investigator and Retired RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) in 2008.

Still active and wanting to stay busy he took classes in Gun Repair, Small Engine Repair and Weatherization at Edgecombe Community College. At the age of 69, Claxton successfully completed a comprehensive evaluation and received certification as a "Building Analyst Professional" by the Building Performance Institute, Inc. He was self- employed as a Certified Building Analyst Professional and performed residential energy audits.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tarboro where he served on the budget finance committee and other committees over the years. He joined the Golden K in 2015 and served as Treasurer of The New Hope Hunting Club. Claxton loved to hunt, fish, watch sports and talk shows on TV. He also enjoyed trips to his home on the Outer Banks.

In addition to his parents, Claxton was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents George Benton Honeycutt and Martha Ann Honeycutt; paternal grandparents Newsome Early Autry and Macy Matthews Autry.

Claxton leaves behind to continue his legacy his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Carol Jones Autry of Tarboro NC; three sons, Robert Claxton Autry Jr. and wife Holly Steel Autry, Boone NC; John Timothy Autry and wife Emily Nollkamper Autry of Greenville NC, William McCurry Autry and wife Tennille McBryde Autry, Greenville NC; granddaughters Haley Elizabeth Autry, Sydnee Mae Autry, Alexus Kaelin Autry, Ava Elizabeth Autry, Anna Lee Autry, step granddaughters Emily Grace Steel and Zoee Meredith LeBlanc; step mother Almeta Core Autry, Stedman NC, mother-in-law Mae Currie Jones Gums, Tarboro NC, brothers and sister-in-laws Wilson Monroe Autry and wife Kay Cannon Autry, George Blackman Autry and wife Brenda Matthews Autry; brother-in-laws Robert E Jones and Ann of Norlina NC, Henry L Gums Jr. and wife Susan of Blythewood SC, sister-in-law Joy Gums Floyd and husband Gilbert of Simpsonville SC; numerous nieces, nephews and first cousins.

A celebration of Claxton's life will be held at First Baptist Church, 605 Main Street, in Tarboro NC on Monday, June 6, 2016 at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 until 5PM at Carlisle Funeral Home, Tarboro NC and in the Friendship Hall at First Baptist Church prior to the services from 2:00-3:00 PM. A private family grave-side service will be held at Edgecombe Memorial Park.
