Wayne County Outlook

August 19, 1954

Ralph M. Brown, 34, son of Mr. and Mrs. Please Brown, of New Albany, Indiana, was burned to death last Saturday morning when a frame rooming house belonging to his father was burned. His incinerated remains were returned here for burial Sunday afternoon at the Alexander cemetery, with Rev. Hoyt C. Parsley officiating and the Richard R. Lee funeral home in charge.

The music was furnished by Misses Alma Tate, Blanche Crawford, Trecia Roberts and Anita Morgan.

Burial and honors were by the Disabled American Veterans.

On Ralph's 22nd birthday, he entered the services of his country and was wounded in battle, following which he spent considerable time in government hospitals and was out on a three-day leave from the hospital when he died.

Doctors advise his family that his death was due to his services.

Beside his parents, he is survived by his widow and one daughter.

The following is the report of the fire from the Louisville Times: Two persons were burned to death early this morning in a fire which leveled a frame home near New Albany. The victims were identified tentatively as Ralph Brown, who lived at the residence on River Road near Jackson, southwest of the city limits, and Miss Margie Smith, 30, of 524 Bank street, New Albany.

Firemen who were called to the blaze at 4:40 am were unable to get to the victims in time to save them. There was no water supply nearby and firemen had only their own 150-gallon water tank available to fight the blaze. Injured in the fire was a man identified by Glen Farrar as Floyd Knobs, who reportedly was staying in the house. He was taken to Floyd county hospital where he was treated for cuts and burns.

Cause of the fire was not immediately determined. Damage was estimated at $1,500.
