Son of James and Sallie (Harvey) Vest of Alabama.
"Uncle Jimmie", as he was known around the community and "Grand-Sir" (prounced "Grancer") to his relatives,was a pioneer Baptist preacher and a stanuch Democrat. He traveled by horse and preached at all the churches.He was a member of a Royal Arch Mason, and a member of the Int. Org. of Odd Fellows (IOOP)among others things.
Rev. J. J. had coal black eyes and hair. He had unusually long arms and was never whipped in log-rolling contests.
Married: Delaney Kent, April 10, 1842, in Morgan Co., Alabama. Married 63 yrs. J.J. died three yrs. & four days after Delaney. Of this union was eleven children. They are at rest side by side in the Vest cemetary.
