Mrs. Harriett Donnelly Passes Peacefully Away Surrounded by Her Family.
Mrs. Harriett Donnelly, wife of James W. Donnelly. died at her husband's residence No. 28 N orth Centre Street, last evening at 10 o'clock after an illness of three mouths caused by lung trouble. The deceased lady was taken to her bed about one mouth ago and up to Sunday last her case progressed rather favorably, but about 10 o’clock yesterday afternoon a change for the worse set in and she sank rapidly, death ensuing from congestion of the lungs at the hour above mentioned. Members of her family and kind friends were with her during her last hours, and did ail In their power to ward off the dread visitant, but in vain. During the closing moments of her life she had complete consciousness recognizing friends about her and the end was most peaceful, a fitting termination to a life of piety and unselfish labor for others. Mrs. Donnelly passed away with full confidence in Him who had been her guide and stay through life. The deceased was 53 years of age. and was the daughter of Samuel D. Ways, Sr., of this city. She was married to James W Donnelly on November 16, 1858. and leaves surviving her a husband and five children—Chas. W., one of the proprietors of the Independent; Will c, Harry R, Susie and Ann E. Mrs. Donnelly was a lady of unusual force and beauty of character possessing rare qualities and her place in the community will not be easily filled. Possessed of a vigorous intellect, great culture and unbounded energy, it can be truly said of her that she used her rare powers for the glory of God and the benefit of her fellow creatures. Progressive, active, abreast of the times in all matters, she was thoroughly unselfish and never hesitated for a moment when she saw an opportunity of conferring any good work upon others. Prominent in all Christian work, she was a consistent member of Christ's English Lutheran Church and took an especially deep interest in the temperance cause, and was at the time of her death an active member of the Y W C T U and the parent body, the Women's' Christian Temperance Union. She was also an active member of the Woman's Auxiliary of the Y M C A. Mrs Donnelly was a woman free from ostentation and dispensed charity with a free hand. While the universal expressions of regret heard on every side attested the general esteem in which she was held. Only those who knew her intimately could appreciate the full and deep beauty of her character. Of an unusually sunny temperament and with many graces of person and manner, her presence ever cast a bright ray over those with whom she came in contact, and is difficult to realize that in the mysterious workings of the Supreme will, a life so full of brightness and vital force has been cut short. She lived for others, and even in her last moments her thoughts were for the comfort of those around her. Her noble, unselfish life, so fraught with useful lessons to all, was only a preparation for her calm and peaceful departure from a world which was assuredly brighter and better for her having lived in it. The funeral for the deceased will take place from the English Lutheran Church tomorrow, Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. The interment will be in the German Lutheran Cemetery.
